Parent FAQ: Artificial Intelligence in Schools

Clear answers to common family questions about how artificial intelligence may be discussed, explored, and used in ways that support thoughtful, ethical, and authentic student learning.

What is artificial intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that can generate text, images, or responses based on patterns in large amounts of information. Some AI tools can assist with writing, answering questions, or summarizing information.

Is the district allowing students to use AI?

In some cases, teachers may introduce AI tools as part of instruction. These uses are guided by clear expectations and instructional goals. Students are expected to follow teacher directions regarding when and how AI may be used.

Will AI replace teachers?

No. Teachers remain central to the learning experience. AI does not replace professional expertise, relationships with students, or instructional decision-making.

Will AI replace student learning?

No. Students are still expected to read, write, solve problems, discuss ideas, and demonstrate their own understanding. AI may be used as a tool for exploration or analysis, but it does not replace the learning process.

How do teachers know if work is authentic?

Teachers use a variety of strategies to understand student thinking, including discussions, drafts, in-class work, and assessments designed to demonstrate reasoning and understanding. Academic integrity expectations continue to apply.

Is student privacy protected?

Student privacy is an important priority. The district evaluates digital tools carefully and provides guidance to staff regarding appropriate platforms. Students are also taught not to share personal or sensitive information with AI systems.

Will expectations be the same at every grade level?

No. AI conversations and expectations are developmentally appropriate. Elementary students focus on foundational skills and digital citizenship, while older students explore AI more deeply and critically.

How can families support responsible use?

Families can support students by encouraging thoughtful technology use and discussing topics such as accuracy, honesty, and responsible decision-making when using digital tools.
