Manhasset Sixth Graders Excel at KidOYO Hackathon
On March 23, our Munsey Park and Shelter Rock sixth graders showcased their creativity, collaboration and coding skills at the KidOYO Hackathon, held at the Huntington Hilton during the ASSET Technology Conference.
Competing in the Middle School Division, our teams faced 16 schools in a high‑stakes, Risk‑style strategy competition. To capture territory and advance across the board, students solved sophisticated coding challenges, designed original games and navigated a dynamic, interdisciplinary experience blending mathematics, music and digital art.
This year’s hackathon theme transported students to Ancient Egypt, where they decoded hieroglyphics and explored Egyptian geography and culture while tackling complex coding challenges. The unique theme encouraged students to think critically, creatively and collaboratively as they brought ancient history into a modern, digital context.
We are incredibly proud of both of our competing teams for their exceptional performances:
Shelter Rock Digital Defenders
Coached by Dina Merolesi
🏆 1st Place Champions
Munsey Park Cookie Coders
Coached by Debbie Costello
🥉 3rd Place Winners
Having two teams place in the top three is a remarkable achievement and a true testament to our students’ dedication, teamwork and problem‑solving skills – as well as the commitment and guidance of their coaches.
Our students’ creativity was also recognized with the following honors:
🥈 Best Team Logo – 2nd Place, Munsey Park
🥈 Best Team Banner – 2nd Place, Shelter Rock
The excitement continues! Thanks to the Shelter Rock team’s victory at last year’s event, our district has earned the prestigious honor of hosting the next KidOYO Hackathon.
On Friday, April 24, we will welcome 25 teams from across the region to our Secondary School for the Upper Elementary KidOYO Hackathon. We are thrilled to host this event and provide an opportunity for even more students to engage in innovation, collaboration and creative problem‑solving.
Congratulations to all of our talented students and dedicated coaches on this outstanding accomplishment!
