MBC Triumphs at Annual Scholastic Journalism BASH Awards
Manhasset Broadcasting Company achieved exceptional recognition at the annual scholastic journalism BASH Awards, hosted by Hofstra University’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication on May 21. Accompanied by faculty moderators Mrs. Kathleen Dreyer and Ms. Aspasia Tsampas, MBC’s e-board and student media team joined approximately 40 elite broadcasting and journalism programs from across Long Island and New York City for an immersive day of networking, development and awards celebration.
The highly competitive regional event featured over 200 student-produced video submissions evaluated by a panel of industry professionals. Highlighting the technical precision, narrative depth and journalistic integrity of Manhasset’s student media program, MBC secured top honors across multiple core divisions:
- 1st place – Best Short Broadcast (0–5 minutes): Awarded to the network crew for exemplary execution, pacing and visual storytelling in a local news package. Click here to view
- 2nd place – Best PSA: Awarded to Aidan Royce and James Hogan for their PSA “Don’t Swallow Your Future” created to educate middle and high school students on the dangers of drug and alcohol misuse. Click here to view
- 2nd place – Best Local Multimedia Reporting: Awarded for the innovative "AI Town Hall" MBC broadcast segment, paired seamlessly with Nate Siebert’s accompanying deep-dive print journalism piece. Click here to view
Beyond competitive victories, Manhasset served as an academic leader at the event. MBC News Director Chloe Eng commanded a dynamic, interactive student breakout workshop focused entirely on newsroom ethics. Utilizing nine real-world developmental scenarios, Chloe guided regional peers through critical structured debates regarding the execution of ethical principles in contemporary news gathering. The session drew widespread acclaim and a special visit from BASH founder and organizer David Gamberg, who personally addressed the students to reinforce the vital importance of media ethics.
These extraordinary accomplishments represent a true milestone for the district's media program. The dedication, integrity and exceptional talent demonstrated by the entire MBC crew reflect the very best of our schools, bringing immense pride to the entire Manhasset community as these students continue to set a high standard for future broadcast journalists.
