Manhasset to Welcome Dr. Gaurav Passi as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction

The Manhasset School District is proud to welcome Dr. Gaurav Passi as the new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, effective July 1, 2019. The Manhasset Board of Education appointed Dr. Passi at its May 9th meeting, filling the vacancy created by the announced retirement of the current Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Charles Leone.

“Dr. Passi is a proven collaborator and leader,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera. “He shares our focus and commitment to providing all students a rich academic program and expansive opportunities, while nurturing each student’s social and emotional well-being. We are pleased to welcome him to Manhasset. I would be remiss if I did not extend my gratitude to Dr. Leone for his warmth, dedication, and many years of valued service to the Manhasset community.”

For the last 10 years, Dr. Passi has served as a high school principal, first at Long Beach High School and more recently at Bayport-Blue Point High School. Under his leadership, Bayport-Blue Point High School experienced a substantial increase in Advanced Placement course enrollment, leading to its recognition by the College Board as an AP Honor Roll School. The school’s Advanced Regents Diploma rate also rose to historically high levels. In 2017, the school won the prestigious U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award as a High Performing School of Excellence, and it has been consistently recognized as a high performing school by the New York State Education Department since Dr. Passi’s arrival.

At Bayport-Blue Point High School. Dr. Passi also oversaw two peer education programs aimed at promoting healthy communication and strengthening connections between students. These included the Peers-to-Peers program, which was designed to give every incoming 9th grader an 11th grade student who would help them transition into high school; and the peer education program which focused on peers teaching peers lessons on kindness, the power of connections, and healthy communications.

At Long Beach High School, Dr. Passi oversaw the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and cultivated a focus on college and career readiness. This included increasing opportunities for all students to take college-level courses while substantially increasing enrollment in AP and IB courses.

Prior to his appointment in Long Beach, Dr. Passi served as assistant principal at Northport High School and as a dean at Locust Valley High School. He also taught social studies at Farmingdale High School.

"The Board has an appreciation for Dr. Passi's thoroughness and ability to bring all stakeholders together toward the fulfillment of a shared vision," said Board of Education President Regina Rule. "We welcome him to our Manhasset team and look forward to his collaboration with our fine administrative team guiding our faculty and instructional staff and delivering sound educational programs to fulfill the needs of all Manhasset students."

Dr. Passi is a past recipient of the Council of Administrators and Supervisors’ Leadership Award, the Bayport-Blue Point Educators Who Make a Difference Award and the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ Dissertation Award. He also serves as a New York State Education Department Principal Mentor. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in history, a Master of Arts in social studies education, and a certificate of advanced study in educational administration and policy studies, all from Hofstra University. He earned his Doctor of Education from Dowling College.
