Secondary School Takes 4th Overall at Science Olympiad

3 Teams Place in the Top 15; School Advances to NYS Competition

On Saturday, Feb. 1, 45 students from Manhasset Secondary School participated in the Nassau West Regional Science Olympiad Competition, held at Kellenberg Memorial High School. The competition consisted of 23 events in all branches of science and engineering. Manhasset students won 22 medals in 16 different events. Of the 37 teams that competed from across Long Island, Manhasset’s three teams ranked fifth, 10th and 15th. Manhasset won a trophy for being the fourth-best school overall and, for the first time, has advanced to the state-level competition to be held in Syracuse, New York, in March! The students were coached by Matthew Kaufman and Pavithra Sundar.

Designer Genes: third place – Rachel Lee and Taylor Wang; fifth place – Mir Zayid Alam and Elizabeth Wu

Dynamic Planet: second place – William Apostolou and Harrison Chin; seventh place – Jonathan Wu and Isabelle Yeo

Experimental Design: first place – Caitlin Kim, Derek Lu and Ivan Vuong; fourth place – Samantha Chen, Ethan Horowitz and Ryan Huang

Fossils: fifth place – Sanjna Kedia and Emma Wang

Geologic Mapping: fifth place – Wilson Hu and Aaron Zhang; sixth place – Dylan Wu and Serena Zhao

Machines: third place – Ryan Huang and Joseph Yoo

Ornithology: sixth place – Taylor Fox and Emma Wang; seventh place – Lea Klissouris and Gwendolyn Seto

Protein Modeling: fourth place – Mir Zayid Alam, Joshua DeLeeuw and Dylan Wu; seventh place – Rachel Lee, Caroline Yoon and Allison Zhang

Sounds of Music: sixth place – Joshia DeLeeuw and Kevin Gauld
